THE 4th ANNUAL
BROOKLYN BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL
Legion Park
June 6 and 7, 2008
Brooklyn, Wisconsin 53521
608-455-1457
The gate opens at 3 pm for this wonderful Festival on Friday, June 6th with food available about 5 pm. At 7 pm, the Jefferson County Bluegrass Band, our wonderful host band, kicks off the Festival with their solid traditional bluegrass sound. The headliner for Friday night is The Henhouse Prowlers from Chicago, another hot band with traditional and original songs. On Saturday morning, June 7th, there will be two instrumental workshops beginning at 10 am and an open mike at 11am. (Food about midmorning, too.) Our instructors this year are Linda Sandersen, Pick’n Up Speed, teaching auto harp and Mike Stern, also Pick’n Up Speed, conducting a crosspicking guitar workshop. Not to be missed and no charge! The open mike is waiting for all comers and should be great fun. Jamming is encouraged and mistakes expected. The jamming at the campfires on Friday and Saturday are a special treat—somehow that fire and smoke makes the music sound better…
Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1 pm, 7 bands will play 50 minute sets until 8 pm when our Festival headliner band, Tangled Roots from Minneapolis, tops off this Festival with their breathtaking technique and harmony. Tangled Roots has 2 musicians who toured several years with Special Consensus and other regional bands plus two excellent Twin Cities musicians combined to create an rock solid bluegrass band. With Tangled Roots, we believed we didn’t have to go far to find the headliner for this year’s Festival. We have 2 bands returning from last year, Jefferson County and the Llama Mamas. Because we are trying to bring in regional talent, 3 bands are new to this Festival: from metro Milwaukee, Pick’n Up Speed and Liberty Bluegrass Band and also from Minneapolis, The High 48s. Locally, bands that are new to the Festival this year are John Fabke and The Lonesome Aces, The Krause Family and, a new local band, This is The Squirrel Hunters. The Llama Mamas, a local duo who sing folk and original tunes were requested by fans to return this year and we are delighted to bring them back. All of these bands are “top shelf” and we are proud to offer such a strong line up!
Tickets: $10 Friday eve; $20 all Saturday; $25 for both days; children 12 and under no charge; $7/night camping. Questions? We would especially like to thank Doug Hodge, Jefferson County, who is not only an excellent musician but a great friend and supporter of bluegrass and especially the committee who organized this Festival. He is our mentor and is letting us fledge into our own homegrown Festival. Fortunately for us, he is never too far away when we need him. Thanks, Doug and the Jefferson County Bluegrass Band!
Our goal is to create a premier bluegrass Festival in this region and with camping and homemade food and local beverages, an event for all to remember. Having one’s soul nurtured by live, acoustic, bluegrass music, in the open air and in the company of other passionate souls, transcends all differences. This is why this Festival was created. The Board of Trustees of the Village of Brooklyn wants to welcome you to our charming community and have contributed $2500 in seed money to this Festival as an investment in its future. We have big plans to revitalize our downtown and expand our commercial base. Watch us grow! We invite you to come back next year!!
